European Clinic of Sports Traumatology and Orthopedics
Pediatric traumatology and orthopedics looks into all types of congenital and acquired pathologies of the musculoskeletal system, as well as benign neoplasm of musculoskeletal system in children from the first months of life up to 18 years. This medical area involves quite a large and specific range of diseases. These are, above all, musculoskeletal system disorders: congenital deformity of the lower and upper extremities, hip, patella and knee dislocation, congenital muscular torticollis and other disorders.
The most common musculoskeletal system disorders in children are hip dysplasia, congenital clubfoot, dysplastic syndrome, and hypermobility of the joints. Without preventive treatment and orthopedic control these can result in planovalgus deformity postural abnormalities and scoliosis.
Musculoskeletal Neoplasms are often diagnosed in children of different age: osteochondroma, ganglion cyst, various benign tumors (bone cysts, fibrous dysplasia, exostotic dysplasia). There are a lot of such abnormalities. Today they are successfully operated starting from age of 5-6 years until the completion of bone growth.
One of the specific areas of ECSTO work is a surgical leg lengthening in children. Our clinic performs a unique procedure which is called chondroplasty in children with short stature (from 1 meter) resulted from delayed growth regions development. By virtue of high-tech equipment and tools in the clinic, and the use of up-to-date bone grafting techniques, we can increase the body height in children from 1 to 1.5 meters.
Another unique area of ECSTO work is temporary blocking of the growth regions. For example, if a child has experienced trauma: femur fracture. After conservative surgical treatment of a complicated shattered femur fracture this limb becomes fixed tightly by driving in wedges due to the plate installation. Because of increased vascularity in this region, the bone begins to grow more actively and gradually becomes 1.5 – 2 cm longer. With the standard treatment, elongated bone is to be resected, fusion is to be achieved and complex plates are to be installed. Up-to-date European technique, used in ECSTO, allows temporary blocking of the growth region. Under the control of electronic-optical converter (EOC) – portable x-ray equipment that allows to operate on the smallest bone - growth region is blocked from both sides (above and below) with special plates, and growth in this region slows down. Upon reaching alignment of the limb length, the block is released. This operation is performed at the age of 10 years, while the child is growing most actively.
Currently in the ECSTO clinic the successful treatment of the musculoskeletal system injuries and diseases in children from the first months of life up to 18 years is performed. By virtue of the wide diagnostic facilities and equipment that meets European standards, the use of advanced conservative and surgical treatment approaches and up-to-date rehabilitation options in the clinic an effective treatment of musculoskeletal system disorders in children of any complexity is provided.
