Children's clinic
A pediatric orthopedic surgeon deals with the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of musculoskeletal diseases and disorders in children of all ages.
The diseases faced by the pediatric orthopedist and proper treatments are quite specific and require a special expertise and training. Most of these diseases are associated with growth and development of children and do not occur in adult patients.
The pediatric orthopedic surgeon deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as congenital and acquired diseases of limbs and spine of the child, gait disorders, joint pains of different origin. The pediatric orthopedist provides consultations for parents, advises on prevention methods and sets of exercises that enable proper and harmonious development of the child's body.
Possible causes of musculoskeletal diseases may be:
  • diseases of the musculoskeletal system
  • extra weight;
  • genetic predisposition;
  • rickets in earlier childhood;
  • inappropriate or low quality footwear.

Traumatology and Orthopaedics department of EMC Children's Clinic provides diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of diseases and injuries of the locomotor system in children:
  • deformation of extremities (x-shaped and o-shaped deformities of the limbs, impaired metabolism of vitamin D, rickets and rickets-like diseases);
  • posture disorders and spinal deformities (scoliosis, kyphosis);
  • lagging and advancing of growth;
  • congenital disorders of the musculoskeletal system (treatment of congenital clubfoot with Ponseti method);
  • dislocation of the hip joint, hip dysplasia;
  • torticollis (wryneck ), cervical spine instability;
  • limbs and spine injuries of different origins, including those requiring emergency medical care;
  • flat feet;
  • Osgood–Schlatter and Scheuermann's diseases, et al.

It is common knowledge that it is easier to prevent a disease than to cure it, so preventive medical examinations by an orthopedist should be undergone starting at a very early age, in order to monitor the development of the musculoskeletal system. During a routine preventive examination at the EMC Children’s Clinic a pediatric orthopedist assesses the range of motion in the joints, inspects the anatomy of spine axis, and in case of any suspected disease determines diagnostic measures.
Be sure to consult with a qualified pediatric orthopedist, if you notice the following symptoms in your child:
  • occurrence of a defense attitude or the head or another segment of the locomotive system (hand, foot);
  • the child spares a hand or foot and tries to use it less;
  • when you notice a typical "crunch" or "click" during the limbs movements;
  • the difference in the axis and the length of the limbs (upper and lower);
  • pain while walking in the joints, knees, lower legs, spine.

During the examination at our Clinic the pediatric orthopedist will ask questions, collect a case history, do all the necessary orthopedic measurement for a precise diagnosis.
Depending on the child’s disease the pediatric orthopedist chooses an appropriate method of treatment: this may consist in massage, exercises on a special training apparatus, physiotherapy, therapeutic exercises, the use of orthotic insoles and mattresses. The pediatric orthopedic surgeon also determines the need for surgery.
The pediatric orthopedist at the EMC conducts an obligatory planned examination of the child at the age of 1 month for early detection of congenital diseases and their treatment; and later at 3, 6 and 9 months on the doctor's orders, because during this period the children feel especial load as they are learning to crawl, sit and walk. Implementation of planned preventive examinations by a pediatric orthopedist enables early detection of diseases, which provides faster and more efficient treatment, because during the first year of life the musculoskeletal system is most flexible and able to recover.
From the age of 1 year, we recommend that you undergo annual examinations by a pediatric orthopedist for the purpose of prevention. Posture disorders and scoliosis of different severity are very common among adolescents. It is early diagnosis and timely treatment that will make the methods selected by the pediatric orthopedic surgeon most effective. Parents should monitor the development of their child carefully so as to be able to notice deviations, that would require correction and treatment by an experienced pediatric orthopedist.
